PCS Third Generation CDMA Systems

Study of the Physical Layer

This site is under development...

Background

The Faculty of Engineering at McGill University was granted a number of NSERC scholarships, to promote research at the undergraduate level. This project was chosen by the selection committee, and at present it is under development in the Wireless Communications Group at McGill University, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, under the supervision of Prof. H.Leib.

This project consists of a study of the Radio Transmission Technology (RTT) proposals for third generation Personal and Mobile Communication Systems. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) fosters an intense activity for standardization of such systems, to facilitate global roaming and universal personal access to telecommunication services of the 21st century. The ITU has defined a set of service capabilities called IMT-2000, for International Mobile Telecommunications 2000. Many organizations have made proposals and this study will concentrate on the following three, which are using CDMA technology: UTRA (Europe), cdma2000 (North America) and ARIB (Japan).

The objectives of this project are to provide a brief overview of the above proposals, with links to more detailed information. The result of this project can be used for a fast initiation in this area, with convenient links to detailed information, and to supplement lecture courses on communications.
